Automattic to offer hosted forums?
Matt Mullenweg, Automattic head honcho and creator of WordPress, mentioned a new forum software in an article over at the Houston Chronicle TechBlog (via Blogging Pro). The new piece of software is called TalkPress (for now at least, see this bbPress forum thread), and will co-exist with bbPress.
In the article, Matt said that forums haven’t changed in ten years.
Mullenweg says he’ll use the new cash to fund more projects, including a new forums product. Called TalkPress, he said it will be “smaller, lighter, with fewer features but a richer customization API.”
Most things points to TalkPress, or whatever they’ll call it, being a WordPress.com-like hosted derivate of bbPress. In other words, TalkPress will share code with bbPress, and hopefully this will push the (neglected?) forum software forward to a 1.0 release. A special repository called BackPress will handle the shared code, although it’s a bit vague at the moment. More in the bbPress forum thread.
